Animated Histories of the Southwest Borderlands animates the complex social history southwest borderlands of the United States along four major river systems - the Río Grande, the Colorado, the Mississippi and the Sacramento Rivers - through musical documentary animation. I am asking for your help to meet my fundraising goal of $6,000 which will be used to support storyboard development for the first three episodes of the animation. The animated series consists of the following three chapters: 1. Frontera: The Making of the Southwest Borderlands, a quick-paced sung narrative remapping centuries of migration, settlement and conflict along major rivers in North America from “prehistoric” cultures of the Anasazi and Athabaskan people through the evolution and conflict of the of the Pueblo cultures, the Spanish, Mexican and American settlements to the establishment of the present border politics of the United States. 2. Black Legend: Rebellion on the Río Grande, tracing two Indigenous uprisings in New Mexico: the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 led by Popé's rebellion that expelled the Spanish from New Mexico, and the assassination of the first American governor of New Mexico, Charles Bent, in 1847 led by Tomasito's revolt that foiled the Americans first attempt at settling the state. 3. Eureka! Gold on the Sacramento River, tells the story of Sutter's Fort, a settlement that became the center of the discovery of gold, the Indian slave trade, the environmental transformation of the state and nation leading to a great influx of diverse populations into the west. Laced together with a musical narrative approach sung by a chorus of contemporary Mariachi, the program is animated with hand-drawn characters, maps, graphic “assets” that reference Pre-Colombian art, Native American iconography, Spanish world maps, European engravings and more. The computer animation and motion graphics document critical, but marginalized moments in the long history of a contested border region offering new perspectives on issues of immigration, nationhood and the formation of the southwest borderlands of the United States, a region of vast cultural exchange, conviviality and cohabitation, but also one marred by violence and trauma spanning over 500 years. Whether through expansion or elasticity of the southern border through immigration raids, forced sterilization, Minutemen patrols and/or laws like Arizona's SB1070 targeting Mexican and Central Americans, the ideological understanding and misunderstanding of the U.S.-Mexico border region stands at the forefront of much of the border's historical and contemporary tension. The proposed program, Frontera, offers historical context and nuance to the often-constrained conversations around US-Mexico border policy in the form of art, music, humor, documentary and Saturday-morning cartoons. ;

On November 20, 2009, Sarah Palin visited Columbus, OH as part of her book signing tour for "Going Rogue." When her supporters were asked broad questions about why they why they thought she should be president, the responses were vague: She&os;s "real." She&os;ll "stick up for America." THERE ARE UNINFORMED OBAMA SUPPORTERS, TOO It has been said in comments that we would find similarly talking point-driven, substance-less supporters at an Obama rally, and we agree. But no politician has emerged on the national stage as undefined and unqualified as Sarah Palin, and her public persona--which is anti-intellectual by definition--discourages substance. Instead, we get winking. One could hardly imagine her giving a complex speech about race in America, or speaking eloquently about our country&os;s relations with Islam. Not just because she couldn&os;t write such a speech (Obama has speech-writers, of course) but because she wouldn&os;t--such necessarily academic discussion is antithetical to the persona she&os;s created for herself and that her supporters have come to love. CHERRY-PICKING As for accusations of cherry picking, which are commonly thrown at interview-based videos, it simply isn&os;t what we did. We interviewed only a few more people than ended up in the video, not hundreds, and what was cut was done for time purposes. The people were selected at random--some offered to be interviewed--and we were only there for about 90 mins (it gets dark early and fast in Ohio right now). What didn&os;t make it into the video was just more footage of people talking generically or about taxes/spending, drilling, and abortion, and we constructed blocks in the piece to represent those issues. Of course the piece was edited to be entertaining (this is YouTube, after all, where the currency is cat videos) but we don&os;t believe we misrepresented the attitudes of the people at that signing in any way. About 300 protesters gathered in front of Anthem Blue Cross&os; San Francisco headquarters September 22nd to bring attention to the company&os;s opposition to health care reform. Demonstrators converged on California&os;s Blue Cross office before noon and continued their loud protest for over two hours. They set up two sound systems, one for entertainment that playfully mocked the health insurance company&os;s large profits, a second for speakers who told emotional stories of their problems with denied claims and treatment at the hands of one of the nation&os;s largest insurers. Satirizing the wealthy lifestyle of investors who profit from health care companies, a street theater group called Billionaires for Wealthcare gave speeches insisting that profits must be considered before the needs of people. They aped the rich with fake diamonds, golf clubs and top hats, and hoisted a placard reading "Blue Cross/Palin 2012". Following the Billionaires&os; exuberant performance, speakers, including real doctors and patients, took to a second sound system to chastise Anthem Blue Cross for what one person called the company&os;s "unforgivable arrogance". Later while the gathered crowd marched around the building chanting loudly, fifteen delegates from the protest attempted to enter Anthem Blue Cross&os; 13th floor office in the Embarcadero Center with a list of demands. Blue Cross personnel refused to open the door but listened to the delegates through an intercom, giving no response. The Billionaires, who joined the delegation to the high rise headquarters, insisted that they be allowed to enter the office saying, "after all, we OWN you." They were also rebuffed.

The most alarming thing about it: the news came from an official City report. Distributed by over 2000 volunteers throughout New York City, the paper has been created by The Yes Men and a coalition of activists as a wake-up call to action on climate change. It appears one day before a UN summit where Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will push 100 world leaders to make serious commitments to reduce carbon emissions in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate conference in December. Ban has said that the world has "less than 10 years to halt (the) global rise in greenhouse gas emissions if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences for people and the planet," adding that Copenhagen is a "once-in-a-generation opportunity." Although the 32-page New York Post is a fake, everything in it is 100% true, with all facts carefully checked by a team of editors and climate change experts. "This could be, and should be, a real New York Post," said Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men. "Climate change is the biggest threat civilization has ever faced, and it should be in the headlines of every paper, every day until we solve the problem." The fake Post&os;s cover story ("We&os;re Screwed") reports the frightening conclusions of a blue-ribbon panel of scientists commissioned by the mayor&os;s office to determine the potential effects of climate change on the City. That report was released in February of this year, but received very little press at the time. Other lead articles describe the Pentagon&os;s alarmed response to global warming ("Clear & Present Disaster"), the U.S. government&os;s sadly minuscule response to the crisis ("Congress Cops Out on Climate"), China&os;s alternative energy program ("ChinaÕs Green Leap Forward Overtakes U.S."), and how if the US doesn&os;t quickly pass a strong climate bill, the crucial Copenhagen climate talks this December could be a "Flopenhagen." Thrown, dropped, mutilated, and ground-up alive. This is the disturbing reality faced by hundreds of thousands of chicks each day at the world&os;s largest egg-laying breed hatchery Hy-Line International in Spencer, Iowa. New hidden camera footage obtained at this facility during a http://www.MercyForAnimals.org undercover investigation gives a disturbing glimpse into the cruel and industrialized reality of modern hatcheries. The warm, comforting, and protective wings of these newly hatched chicks&os; mothers have been replaced with massive machines, quickly moving conveyor belts, harsh handling, and distressing noise. These young animals are sorted, discarded, and handled like mere cogs in a machine. For the nearly 150,000 male chicks who hatch every 24 hours at this Hy-Line facility, their lives begin and end the same day. Grabbed by their fragile wings by workers known as "sexers," who separate males from females, these young animals are callously thrown into chutes and hauled away to their deaths. They are destined to die on day one because they cannot produce eggs and do not grow large or fast enough to be raised profitably for meat. Their lives are cut short when they are dropped into a grinding machine tossed around by a spinning auger before being torn to pieces by a high-pressure macerator. Over 21 million male chicks meet their fate this way each year at this facility. For the surviving females, this is the beginning of a life of cruelty and confinement at the hands of the egg industry. Before even leaving the hatchery they will be snapped by their heads into a spinning debeaker a portion of their sensitive beaks removed by a laser. Workers toss and rummage through them before they are placed 100 per crowded box and shipped across the country. The callous disregard for animal welfare at this facility is not isolated. In fact, the conditions documented during this investigation are completely standard and acceptable within the commercial egg industry. Referred to by Hy-Line corporate leaders as mere "genetic products," these chicks are treated just as they are viewed as inanimate objects, rather than the sentient creatures they are. Driven by consumer demand, the egg industry will continue to exploit, abuse, and kill day-old animals as long as doing so remains profitable. Empowered consumers can put their ethics on the table by choosing kindness over cruelty at each meal by adopting an animal-friendly vegan diet.

The RNC 8 are organizers against the 2008 Twin Cities Republican National Convention who have been falsely charged in response to their political organizing: Luce Guillen-Givins, Max Specktor, Nathanael Secor, Eryn Trimmer, Monica Bicking, Erik Oseland, Robert Czernik and Garrett Fitzgerald.

On Saturday, August 30th 2008, the Ramsey County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Department executed search warrants on three houses, seizing personal and common household items and arresting RNC organizers Monica Bicking, Garrett Fitzgerald, Erik Oseland, Nathanael Secor, and Eryn Trimmer. Later that day Luce Guillen-Givins was arrested leaving a public meeting at a park. Rob Czernik and Max Specktor were arrested on Monday, September 1. These arrests were preemptive, targeting known organizers in an attempt to derail 2008 anti-RNC protests in St. Paul, MN before the convention had even begun. The “RNC 8″ were originally charged with conspiracy to riot in the 2nd degree in furtherance of terrorism, a felony which is the first ever use of Minnesota’s PATRIOT Act.

In December 2008, Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner (who is also running for Governor of Minnesota as a Democrat) added three more felony charges: 2nd degree conspiracy to riot (without the terrorism enhancement), 1st degree conspiracy to commit criminal damage to property in furtherance of terrorism, and 1st degree conspiracy to commit criminal damage to property (without the terrorism enhancement). Combined, we believe the charges would carry a maximum of 12.5 years in prison.

Glass Bead Collective, Twin Cities Indymedia, and other independent media activists have released a new film, 'Terrorizing Dissent', an exposé of events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets, 'Terrorizing Dissent' focuses on the story of dissent suppressed. People charged with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism" speak out against the government's campaign to manipulate media coverage and label civil disobedience and community organizing as terrorism.

'Terrorizing Dissent' shows the results of the $50 million dollars the Department of Homeland Security gave to local authorities for security — a large chunk of which went to weaponize the police — and the $10 million insurance policy contract between the RNC Host Committee and the City of St. Paul, which shattered Minnesota's civil compact between protesters and police.

Effectively, the Republican National Committee provided financial cover for the widespread, organized suppression of dissent. The FBI and Secret Service coordinated with local police to raid homes and work spaces before the RNC even began. On the streets, the government's intimidation strategy shut down peaceful protests through the heavy use of tear gas, pepper spray, stun grenades, rubber bullets, and other projectiles. This excessive use of force followed months of harassment and surveillance of community activists. At every stage, local officials have refused to release the documentation behind what they did, from the origins of dubious search warrants to joint powers agreements.

The Republican Party's efforts to control the message and crush dissenting voices were led by one of the top local Republicans, troubled Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher, who personally spearheaded the "pre-emptive raid" strategy and spun the media by claiming captured household items were weapons (most notably, the buckets of recycled grey water he dubbed "urine"). At every stage, from fake urine to riot threats, messages of fear were distributed to chill Minnesotans from exercising their First Amendment rights.

Just days before Fletcher launched high-profile preemptive raids against protesters, two of his closest aides, Mark Naylon and Timothy Rehak, were found guilty on federal charges after they attempted to steal $6,000 in an FBI sting. To shore up his murky political future, Fletcher staged an authoritarian spectacle unparalleled in Minnesota history.

As local Democratic officials cautiously stepped back, Fletcher put himself in front of a classic "security theater" media campaign to create a non-existent enemy, equate civil disobedience with terrorism, and move in to attack peaceful protests. This plan culminated with the blocking and flashbang bombing of a peaceful march organized by anti-war activists on September 4th as John McCain delivered his acceptance speech at the Xcel Center.

Within weeks, John McCain's campaign turned to attacking Barack Obama on the same grounds as the RNC Welcoming Committee, a group that provided logistical help such as housing, food and a convergence center for demonstrators.

This rapidly produced "election cut" shows how the government — even in a liberal state like Minnesota — easily rolled over to domestic militarization and criminal abandonment of Constitutional freedoms. As the Republican National Convention paved the way for a fall of terrifying national instability and financial chaos, Americans need to know about the techniques used to silence Minnesota.
