The world's poorest countries pay almost $100 million every day to the rich world. Read the basics about how this works - and why it should stop. 1. Why should we drop the debt? Debts should be cancelled because they are unjust in terms of their origin, and also because they worsen poverty. 2. How big is the debt of poor countries? The poorest 49 countries have debts totalling US $375 billion, whilst for the poorest 144 countries, it is over US $2.9 trillion. 3. Where did the debt come from? Much of the debt of poor countries is left over from the 1970s - and often arose through reckless or self-interested lending by the rich world. 4. Hasn't all the debt been cancelled? No! Thanks to campaigners, debt cancellation has become a reality - but the debt crisis is still with us. 5. Hasn't the UK cancelled all debts? No! The UK has cancelled many debts, and been active in calling for further cancellation for the poorest – but it still holds billions in debts from other poor countries. 6. What do countries have to do to get cancellation? There are lots of harmful, undemocratic and irrelevant conditions attached to debt cancellation - we want these strings to be cut. 7. Where do debt payments go? Poor countries are paying debts to the World Bank, the IMF, other international bodies (all controlled by rich countries), to rich country governments and to companies. 8. Doesn't corruption make debt cancellation pointless? No. Corruption is a big problem in some places - but funds from debt cancellation do make a difference. 9. How do we prevent future debt crises? We need economic justice - covering debt, trade, aid, tax, etc - and responsible financing in the future. 10. What can I do? Plenty! two years after the outbreak of the war in nahr al-bared, the camp's fate remains unclear. the reconstruction of the official camp might start soon, but the army keeps its tight grip on the camp. several checkpoints, barbed wire and military posts cut nahr al-bared off from its surroundings. nahr al-bared camp used to be a thriving marketplace in the northern lebanese region of akkar and about half its costumers were lebanese. during the war, the lebanese army has not only defeated the militant group fatah al-islam, but also completely destroyed the refugee camp. its businesses were looted, smashed and burnt, even after the war had ended. the camp's once flourishing economy was physically eliminated. two years later, about half the camp's population has returned to its adjacent area. hundreds of businesses have re-opened, but economic recovery is seriously hampered by the tight siege imposed by the lebanese army. thus, suspicions have risen that the war's actual target wasn't fatah al-islam, but nahr al-bared's economic life. in this 10-minute film, the co-owner of an ice cream factory, the president of the local trader's committee and the imam of the al-quds mosque speak out on the siege and its economic consequences. please visit our website for background information and further videos on nahr al-bared.

Their goal? To promote the 2010 Winter Games as a motor for "social, economic and environmental benefit." The Olympic Resistance Network and other concerned groups held a demonstration outside Canada Place on Monday, March 30 to protest the environmental damage of the Olympics, and opposed this attempt to greenwash the 2010 Games. "The Olympic Committee is trying hard to portray the 2010 Games as environmentally friendly, but many of the corporate sponsors are either directly involved in, or financing, projects and industries involved in the commodification of water, independent private power projects on BC rivers and most significantly the Alberta tar sands, says Harjap Grewal of the Olympic Resistance Network. Construction, air travel, local traffic and other activities for the two week long 2010 Olympics are expected to generate more than 3,700,000 tons of carbon emissions, the equivalent of five per cent of BCs annual CO2 output. At least 100,000 trees have been destroyed for a 17-day event. VANOC and the BC government violated the International Olympic Committees stated requirement that the host city carry out environmental impact studies before starting work. This environmental destruction is occurring on unceded Indigenous lands, with environmental and financial costs that will burden future generations. Those who claim that the 2010 Games are green are either in denial or are simply lying, says Chris Shaw of 2010 Watch and the Olympic Resistance Network. The Games are not about preserving the environment; they are about turning it over to developers to build condos on.

Despite declarations that it has "disengaged" from the Gaza Strip, Israel maintains control of the Strip's overland border crossings, territorial waters, and air space. This includes substantial, albeit indirect, control of the Rafah Crossing. During the past 18 months, Israel tightened its closure of Gaza, almost completely restricting the passage of goods and people both to and from the Strip. These policies punish innocent civilians with the goal of exerting pressure on the Hamas government, violating the rights of 1.5 million people who seek only to live ordinary lives – to be reunited with family, to pursue higher education, to receive quality medical treatment, and to earn a living. The effects of the closure were particularly harsh during the military operation of Dec. 2008 - Jan. 2009. For three weeks, Gaza residents had nowhere to flee to escape the bombing. Gisha - Legal Center for Freedom of Movement calls on the State of Israel to fully open Gaza's crossings and to allow the real victims of the closure - 1.5 million human beings - the freedom of movement necessary to realize their dreams and aspirations.

In 2001 more than 300 000 people came to Genoa to stop the G8 meeting. Many suffered extreme police violence. 7 years later the trials are coming to an end. The mayor of the city of Genoa has invited the people to ask for public reconciliation. 25 people were sentenced for up to 11 years of prison for property damages such as breaking windows compared to sentences of a maximum of 5 years for the 76 Italian police officers under trial so far. 15 have been found guilty for torture and systematic abuse of authority.

The people with the white t-shirt are the plaintiffs the mayor supposed to apologize to, but the police and officials would not let them into the city hall.

James Nachtwey, a committed, shy man, considered one of the bravest and most important war photographers of our time, has been close enough for over 20 years - a period in which he has not missed a single war. War Photographer follows Nachtwey for two years to hot spots including Kosovo, the West Bank, and Indonesia, as he searches for a picture he thinks he can publish. Special video micro-cameras were attached to Nachtwey's still camera, a technique which allowed viewers, for the first time in the history of movies about photographers, the most intimate insight into the work of a photojournalist.
