G20 Fashion Special

The G20 protest is no anti-war march where everyone (more-or-less) knows what theyre there for. It is a confused affair - perhaps as confused as the hodge-podge of world leaders that make it up. At least with the G8 you knew your enemy - the same rich white men (plus a few Asians) that have been screwing over the planet since way back in the dizzle. This time we had the likes of Argentina and India thrown into the mix - the very same countries that have previously been screwed over by said rich white men and the deregulatory agendas that now have us all drowning in debt.

This confusion was reflected on the streets and although you had your stalwart anarchists that knew exactly what they were there for (smashing the old bill/bankers) most protesters were rightly angry, but a little directionless. Many people we spoke to didnt really know who the G20 were and what they were meeting about.

As such the event became as much a cultural phenomenon and social gathering as a demonstration over some very important, world changing issues. This was reflected in articles like this in Vice which completely ignored the issues and the fact that we found two people down there who were working for a marketing company doing research for brands. They were interviewing the different tribes and asking them what they were wearing in order to give a speech to their corporate daddies later that day. TRUE!

Clearly there is a lot of anger over all sorts of things the bank bailout, expenses, Iraq etc etc. But voting in a bunch of fascists is definitely not the answer. Nevertheless the BNP have been worryingly effective to this end, taking advantage of peoples disillusionment with the mainstream parties. The European elections take place this Thursday and its possible that the BNP could return up to four seats. The reason this is a possibility is because, under the watchful eye of their leader Nick Griffin, they have carefully rebranded themselves so it looks like their not racists, when really theyre racists. We contacted the BNP, pretending to be sympathetic media students that wanted to make a film showing the positive side of the party after the slating they have been getting in the press. They seemed a little suspicious, but we rocked up with the camera anyway and spent the day filming them canvassing various areas around Essex. The BNP dont really seem to understand how camera equipment works and when they thought we werent filming, they would show their true colours.

With HLS' share price now the lowest it has ever been in four years, the unjust incarceration of SHAC campaigners and the latest images of monkeys being abused inside HLS from the latest expose by ADI, there was no better time to stand up and show the animal abusing money men that HLS are a bad investment and we will carry on the fight to close HLS. Around 300 people traveled from around the country (and some from around the world!) to gather by the Bank of England, the only bank in the world to give HLS banking facilities at the behest of the Government for a loud and vibrant demonstration against the financial supporters of HLS in the centre of London. The march aimed to publicly show the financial investors, or even prospective investors, that we won't tolerate puppies being thrown around, monkeys being cut open alive and other innocent animals suffering in silence. Of our anger, passion, focus and determination to carry on the fight despite repressive laws and long jail sentences that some SHAC campaigners have received. The march started off in front of the Bank of England with 20 or so journalists and photographers who followed the protest march around a circular route of 2 miles around the city's financial district.

Short update on outcomes of Birmingham University occupation

The occupation at the University of Birmingham ended on 20th January on the same day it started when the occupiers decided to leave after two shifts of university security and 30 police besieged the building that evening.

Despite the circumstances in which the occupation ended the occupiers still secured a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor and on Thursday 22nd January met with him to discuss their demands from the occupation. The meeting was quite unproductive and resulted in effectively no commitments at all from the university, leaving the occupiers to consider a next move.

The occupation was followed by a large and successful protest (see: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/01/419829.html), also on the 22nd January, organised by a coalition of student societies, but the event went un/misreported by university media, most notably the widely read 'Redbrick' studet newspaper. In an article entitled 'Iron Curtain' in the paper two weeks later, a Redbrick journalist spilled the beans on University and Guild of Students (the student union at Birmingham - who have a veto on content) censorship of reporting of the Gaza-related events. An exchange of letters published in the paper has also slowly enabled news of the week of action to get out to Birmingham students.

At a meeting of Guild council on Thursday 19th February the Palestinian society finally managed to submit the motions relating to the Gaza crisis which they were prevented from tabling at the January meeting by Guild officers. However, during the meeting a coalition of zionists and Guild officers conspired to amend the motion so that it was converted into one preventing all further debate and discussion of Palestine in the council in the future (until it expires or is overturned in a future meeting). They then carried the vote by a small majority, once again shutting down all debate on the Palestinian issue in the union.

Despite these perceived setbacks, the occupation and protests have inspired people and united many groups on campus behind a common cause and are provoking a long -awaited response to suppression of political activity by the university and student union on this and other matters. Supporters of human rights and the self-determination of the Palestinian people at the University of Birmingham will continue to organise despite the complete contempt shown towards them by their union and university authorities and the criminalisation of their activities by the police. The struggle continues!

The meeting includes the premier of Winstan Whitter's new documentary film "Save our Heritage"(some of you may have seen his brilliant film "A legacy in the dust"). The writer Iain Sinclair will describe his strange experience of being banned from Hackney Council's libraries and he will be reading from his forthcoming book "Hackney. That rose-red empire". There will be performances of poetry by Dalston's very own Michael Rosen childrens' laureate, writer and broadcaster. Our Olympic Legacy Followers of OPEN's campaign in Dalston will recall that, on appealing to the Secretary of State to call in the authorities plans for the demolition and redevelopment of Dalston, we received the reply that "the proposed transport interchange between the East London line northern extension, the North London Line and London Buses, is an essential part of the transport improvements required for the London Olympics 2012." Barratt's development of 10 to 20 storey residential towers on Hackney Council's Dalston Lane (South) site. Only 28 flats will be for social housing. These photos are of the Dalston transport interchange now under construction and the towerblocks with 550 flats and shops being built for sale to pay for it. TfL's Â£39 million concrete slab development for a bus turnaround above the Dalston Junction East London Line station where Barratt's are to build further residential towers of up to 20 storeys for private sale. The evening will conclude with information about the authorities plans for the demolition and redevelopment of over 20 more buildings in Dalston and a discussion about our Olympic legacy.

Flashmob RBS and E-On Recruitment Stalls

Over 50 Manchester students staged a flash mob demonstration at the RBS and E.On Recruitments stalls on Thursday 23rd October 2008. The group were protesting against the banks funding of climate chaos and against E.On's plans to build a new coal power station at Kingsnorth. At precisely 1pm, loose coal was dumped on the Royal Bank of Scotland and E-On recruitment stalls. Meanwhile, around 50 demonstrators stripped off their jackets to reveal bright yellow t-shirts with the words, “LEAVE IT IN THE GROUND” emblazoned across their chests. A list of RBS' environmental crimes was then read out to prospective employees attending the recruitment fair at Manchester Central (GMEX) convention centre. [4] Some of the group were then forcibly ejected by security guards whilst others moved on to pay a visit to the E-On recruitment stall. E-On were questioned as to how their plans for a new coal fired power station squared with our commitment to reduce CO2 levels. Toby Brett, 19, physics student at the University of Manchester says, “RBS, formerly priding itself on being “the oil and gas bank”, vastly outstrips all other UK banks in terms of funding climate change. In fact RBS investments emit more carbon dioxide per year than the whole of Scotland.”[6] “Whilst I commend them for investing in renewable forms of energy as well as fossil fuels the two simply do not cancel out.” “We are calling for an immediate halt to highly destructive investment such as in tar sands extraction and a swift switch to renewables. Quite frankly the world cannot wait.” Marina Gerner, 20, Politics, Philosophy and Economics student and campaigns secretary at the University of Manchester's Students Union says, “Coal is the dirtiest, most emissions intensive of fossil fuels and it is outrageous to see how our banks invest in it.”

4 Aces Club

For over thirty years Dalston resident Newton Dunbar ran The Four Aces Club. The Club started its life in 1966 at 12 Dalston Lane in the entrance halls of the original 1886 Dalston circus and theatre buildings. It became north London's home of international black music and a second home to black musicians. With increasing success in the 1980s Newton expanded the business, as the Labrynth, which regularly packed out the whole of Dalston Theatre. At weekends Dalston Lane was heaving until the early hours. Filmmaker Winstan Whitter grew up in Dalston and his brilliant documentary film, containing historic footage, about The Four Aces is now out.
